In my opinion, Andorra is definitely worth visiting, especially if you’re into skiing or snowboarding. This small country in the mountains is famous for its winter sports, and the resorts here are fantastic.
Plus, ski passes in Andorra are considerably cheaper than other ski destinations in Europe so if you’re visiting during the ski season, Andorra should be at the top of your list.
But even if you’re not a skier, I still think Andorra is worth an overnight stay. I’m not a skier and still really enjoyed my visit!
The charming capital city of Andorra la Vella offers great shopping, fantastic dining, and unique attractions like the Caldea Thermal Spa.
That said, I probably wouldn’t recommend a day trip to Andorra from Barcelona. Mainly because the drive is about 3 hours each way, which doesn’t leave you much time to explore.
So if you have the flexibility, I’d plan to stay overnight to really enjoy what Andorra has to offer.
Is Andorra Safe to Visit?
Yes, Andorra is very safe to visit! This small, peaceful country has a low crime rate, and it’s a popular destination for tourists and ski enthusiasts.
It’s relatively quiet and I never felt unsafe when walking around during the day and at night.
But as with any travel destination, it’s always a good idea to stay aware of your surroundings and keep an eye on your belongings, especially in busy areas like the shopping streets of Andorra la Vella.

Here are my top reasons why Andorra is worth visiting:
- Skiing and Snowboarding: If you love winter sports, Andorra is an excellent ski destination. Plus, ski passes in Andorra are considerably cheaper than most other ski destinations in Europe. For example, prices for a 1-day ski pass are around 60€ while they can be around 200€+ in other countries.
- Caldea Thermal Spa: A must-visit for relaxation and pampering, the Caldea Thermal Spa is a unique attraction in Andorra. With indoor and outdoor thermal pools, saunas, and spa treatments, it’s a great way to unwind after a day of skiing or exploring.
- Tax-Free Shopping: As a duty-free zone, Andorra is a tax haven and offers tax-free shopping, making it an attractive destination for those looking for bargains on luxury goods like perfume, electronics, and alcohol. The discounts aren’t super significant, but it’s still a great perk for shoppers.
- Delicious Restaurants: Andorra is known for its hearty cuisine, featuring dishes like trinxat (a potato and cabbage dish), escudella (a stew with pork, beef, and vegetables), and crema catalana (similar to creme brulee). There are also many international dining options available in the capital.

How to Get to Andorra
Andorra doesn’t have its own airport, so you’ll have to enter the country through Spain or France. Here are the best ways to get to Andorra:
Drive to Andorra
The easiest way to get to Andorra is by car. I personally rented a car in Barcelona and drove with friends, and it was a pretty smooth and scenic ride that took about 3 hours.
Some of the roads can be winding and you’ll pass through some mountain tunnels, but the views are really beautiful along the way.
You’ll just want to be prepared for toll roads as there are 2-3 tolls on the drive to Andorra from Barcelona ranging from 4€-14€. These can be paid with cash or a credit card.
From France, you can enter Andorra from Toulouse which is about a 3-hour drive.
Take the Bus to Andorra
If you don’t want to drive, there are also buses that run daily from Barcelona, Lleida, Tarragona, and La Seu D’Urgell to Andorra la Vella.
From France, there are buses that run daily from Toulouse to Andorra la Vella.
Take the Train to Andorra
There are no direct trains to Andorra so it doesn’t really make sense to travel to Andorra by train.
The nearest train stations are L’Hospitalet-près-l’Andorre in France and Barcelona-Sants and Lleida-Pirineus in Spain.
However, they are still far from the Andorran border, so you would have to take a bus or rent a car to reach Andorra.
Best Time to Visit Andorra
The best time to visit Andorra really depends on your interests. Winter (December-March) is perfect for skiing, snowboarding, and enjoying the snow-covered mountains.
The spring and summer months (May-September) are ideal for hiking, mountain biking, and exploring the outdoors.
Alternatively, Fall (October-November) offers a quieter time with beautiful foliage and crisp mountain air.
I personally visited in November and it was a great time to go as the ski season hadn’t started yet and the fall colors were still in full effect.

Andorra la Vella may be a small town, but it’s packed with things to see and do. Here are some of the top things to do in Andorra la Vella:
Relax at Caldea Thermal Spa
Visiting Caldea Spa was definitely the highlight of my trip to Andorra!
This iconic spa is one of the largest in Europe and offers everything from thermal pools to saunas and massage treatments.
My friends and I upgraded to the Premium package, which includes 4 hours of access to the entire facility, including exclusive areas and pools.
Go Skiing
Of course, if you’re visiting in the winter months, skiing or snowboarding is a must-do activity in Andorra.
There are several different ski resorts in the area with runs for all ages and skill levels. You can purchase day passes or multi-day passes depending on your length of stay.
Shop in the City Center
Andorra la Vella is considered to be a shopping haven, thanks to its duty-free status. You’ll find everything from high-end brands to more affordable retailers like Zara, Mango, and Bershka.
I honestly didn’t find the prices to be much different than those in Barcelona but the main shopping street in Andorra la Vella is very pedestrian-friendly and has an incredible amount of shops.
Visit the Church of Sant Esteve
For a taste of Andorra’s history and culture, visit the Church of Sant Esteve (Església de Sant Esteve) located in the city center.
Built in the 12th century, this Romanesque church is one of the town’s oldest churches and features beautiful frescoes and stained glass windows.
Snap a Pic of the Dalí Sculpture
Another must-visit attraction in Andorra la Vella is the “Nobility of Time” sculpture by the famous Catalan artist Salvador Dalí.
This large, bronze melting clock sculpture is located in Plaça de la Rotonda in the middle of Andorra la Vella, right beside the Gran Valira river.
Explore Lookout Points
If you have a car, definitely take some time to stop at the scenic viewpoints around the city for incredible mountain views.
The Mirador Roc del Quer near Canillo is especially popular for its suspended platform and breathtaking panoramas.

Even with its small size, Andorra la Vella has a surprisingly good food scene!
I dined at La Petite Forět, which means “the little forest” in French, and it had stunning forest-themed decor with delicious food and drinks.
La Casa is another really good place to try. It’s designed around different rooms in a house and the menu is full of innovative dishes.
Visit the Christmas Markets
If you happen to be visiting Andorra la Vella from the end of November to December, you definitely shouldn’t miss the Andorra Christmas markets.
These markets are very cute and cozy and offer traditional holiday gifts, decorations, and local foods.

- Make reservations ahead of time: Popular restaurants in Andorra la Vella tend to fill up quickly, especially on weekends or during the ski season. Booking in advance ensures you’ll have a table and can enjoy the fantastic dining experiences Andorra has to offer.
- Be ready for tolls: The drive to Andorra from Barcelona includes 2-3 toll roads, which are a lot more expensive than traditional tolls! The most expensive one was almost 14€ so make sure to have some cash or a credit card ready.
- Dress warmly in fall or winter: Andorra’s mountain climate can be quite chilly, especially during the evenings or in the winter months. Layering is key—pack a warm coat, gloves, and a scarf to stay comfortable while enjoying outdoor activities or strolling through Andorra la Vella. The weather can be much colder than Barcelona!
