Honest Casa de las Artes Madrid Review: Is It Worth It?

I live in Spain and stayed at this luxury Meliá Collection hotel on my most recent trip to Madrid.

Located in the Barrio de las Letras neighborhood, this hotel is designed as a tribute to the seven fine arts, with art woven into nearly every part of the experience.

It’s set inside a beautiful historic building and has one of the most distinctive design concepts I’ve seen at a luxury hotel in Madrid.

In this honest Casa de las Artes Madrid review, I’ll walk you through my experience, including what I loved, what fell short, and a few things to keep in mind.

I think Casa de las Artes is worth it if you’re an art lover and looking for an upscale hotel in Madrid with a central, walkable location.

The hotel does a great job of tying literature, film, painting, sculpture, and architecture into the overall design, which makes it feel very intentional.

The rooms are comfortable and stylish, and the location is perfect for sightseeing, especially if museums are high on your list.

While a few aspects didn’t quite meet my expectations for a five-star hotel, the experience as a whole was still a positive one.

If design, location, and a unique concept are important to you, I think Casa de las Artes is a solid choice.

Here’s a quick breakdown of the pros and cons of staying at Casa de las Artes:

Casa de las Artes is located at Calle de Atocha, 83 in the Barrio de las Letras neighborhood, which is one of the best areas to stay in Madrid.

This neighborhood is known as the Literary Quarter and is very walkable, feels safe, and puts you close to many of the Madrid’s top attractions.

I was able to walk almost everywhere during my stay, including Retiro Park, Plaza Mayor, and the Royal Palace of Madrid.

The hotel is also near Atocha Train Station, which is Madrid’s main train hub. I traveled from Barcelona to Madrid by train, and it was only a 5-minute taxi ride from the station.

There’s also a taxi stand right outside the hotel, which makes getting around easy if you don’t feel like walking.

One thing to note is that the hotel sits on a slight incline, so there is some uphill walking depending on where you’re coming from.

Casa de las Artes is within walking distance of:

• Atocha Train Station (12-minute walk)
• Puerta del Sol (12-minute walk)
• Plaza Mayor (13-minute walk)
• Retiro Park (15-minute walk)
• Mercado de San Miguel (16-minute walk)
• Royal Palace of Madrid (21-minute walk)

I stayed in a Deluxe Room City View, which was very modern and comfortable but it was pretty small.

The bedroom had a king-sized bed with crisp white linens and the pillows were super plush and comfortable.  

The room also included a flat-screen TV, a small sitting area, closet space, a safe, and a minibar setup with a tea kettle and an espresso machine.

I loved the design details throughout the space, like the hand-painted teacups and a retro-style telephone that tied into the hotel’s artistic theme.

My room faced the street, but the view itself just faced another building and wasn’t anything special. 

The only downside was the size but that’s pretty typical for Madrid. If you want more space, you might want to consider upgrading to a suite.

When you walk into the room, you enter directly into the bathroom vanity area, which felt a little strange at first.

And across from the vanity is a separate room with a walk-in shower and toilet.

The bathroom was stocked with nice Carner Barcelona toiletries, along with thoughtful extras like lip balm and hand cream (which I loved).

Bathrobes and slippers were also provided, which added to the overall luxury feel.

The hotel has one main restaurant and cocktail bar called Maché, inspired by the paper mache art form.

The space is absolutely stunning, with tall ceilings, stained glass windows, gold chandeliers, and velvet textures in reds, pinks, and greens.

It feels very classic and elegant, almost like stepping into old-world Madrid.

Maché serves Mediterranean cuisine, and the kitchen is open throughout the day.

I didn’t have time to eat here during my stay, but even stopping by for a drink is worth it just to experience the space.

The library is one of the most impressive spaces in the hotel.

It’s a large open area lined with shelves of historic books, with couches and tables where you can relax, read, or work.

When I visited, it was decorated for Christmas with a huge tree and holiday decor, which made the space feel extra special.

It’s a great place to spend some quiet time without leaving the hotel.

Casa de las Artes also has a small on-site movie cinema called Cinema Miró, located near the library.

This is a really unique feature and something I haven’t seen at other hotels in Spain.

When I was there, they were playing an older film, which fit perfectly with the hotel’s artistic concept.

It’s a nice option for a rainy day in Madrid or a relaxed evening in.

The spa area includes a long indoor swimming pool, lounge beds, a sauna, and a steam room.

While it’s nice to have these facilities, the pool layout was my biggest downside of the hotel.

The pool is located right next to the main lobby hallway and surrounded by floor-to-ceiling glass windows, so it’s basically a fish bowl.

Because of that, it feels very exposed, and relaxing in a swimsuit while people walk by is a bit awkward.

The service at Casa de las Artes was fine, but it didn’t feel exceptional.

Everyone was friendly and polite, but response times were slow at times.

My friend’s room wasn’t ready when we arrived, and although staff said they’d text her once it was available, that never happened.

We also called the front desk for restaurant recommendations and were told someone would call us back, which didn’t happen either.

I also noticed some visible wear and tear around the hotel like scuff marks and scratches.

None of these were major issues, but for a luxury hotel, I expected more attention to detail and follow-through.

I think Casa de las Artes offers good value if you’re drawn to its art-focused concept and prime location.

It’s perfect if you plan to spend a lot of time at museums while visiting Madrid, since many of them are close by.

That said, the fishbowl-style pool and lack of a rooftop are definite drawbacks.

If you plan to spend a lot of time at the hotel, those things may matter more.

Overall, it really comes down to what you prioritize during your stay.
