How to Get From Barcelona to Málaga Spain in 2026

I live in Barcelona and recently visited Málaga, so I can walk you through the easiest ways to travel between the two cities.

In this post, I’ll break down all the best ways to get from Barcelona to Málaga with travel times, costs, and tips so you can decide which is best for your trip.

From quick flights to long train rides, this guide will help you plan the smoothest way to reach Málaga from Barcelona.

Here’s a quick overview of the main transportation options:

Flying is the fastest and easiest way to get from Barcelona to Málaga.

Vueling and Iberia both operate nonstop flights from Barcelona El Prat Airport (BCN) to Málaga-Costa del Sol Airport (AGP). 

The flight takes about 1 hour and 40 minutes, and tickets can be as cheap as 20€ each way if you book in advance.

This is what I did on my last trip, and it was super easy. 

Málaga Airport is just 15 minutes from the city center, and you can get there quickly by taxi or the airport bus. 

With frequent flight options and a short travel time, flying is the best option for most travelers.

If you prefer not to fly, another option is to take the train from Barcelona to Málaga.

There is a direct Renfe AVE high-speed train from Barcelona Sants to Málaga María Zambrano station that takes about 6.5 hours. 

Tickets can be booked on the Renfe website and typically start at around 65€, but prices can easily climb to 100-200€ each way if you don’t book in advance.

Other train routes require a connection in Madrid and usually take 6-9 hours.

If you want to take the train, I’d recommend using Omio to compare routes and prices across operators all in one place. 

Taking the bus from Barcelona to Málaga is the least practical option.

Alsa buses operate between the two cities but they can take more than 15 hours, so it’s a huge time commitment. 

Tickets start around 60€, which is more expensive than flying.

Unless it’s your only option, the bus is not the best way to get from Barcelona to Málaga.

If you want more flexibility, another option is to rent a car and drive from Barcelona to Málaga.

The trip takes around 9-10 hours along major highways, so it is possible to do it in one long day.

This option makes sense if you want to turn it into a road trip and stop in other cities like Valencia, Alicante, or Granada along the way. 

Just keep in mind that driving the whole way in one shot is tiring, and parking in Málaga’s city center can be expensive.

Here are a few tips to make your trip easier:

• Book tickets early: Book tickets as early as possible because prices for trains and flights can rise significantly closer to the travel date. Booking in advance usually gives you the lowest fares and the best choice of times.

• Travel light for flights: Travel light if you are flying on a budget airline like Vueling. Carrying only a backpack will help you avoid extra baggage fees and make the trip smoother.

• Be prepared for no wifi on the trains: From my experience, most trains in Spain do not have wifi.  And even if they do, it usually doesn’t work that well.  Be prepared for no wifi or use an eSIM like Airalo if you need extra data.

• Take a taxi or airport bus in Málaga: Málaga Airport is very close to the city, about 15 minutes away. You can either take a taxi for convenience or hop on the airport bus, which is cheaper and runs regularly.
