Alone in the Alcazar Tour Review: Is It Worth It?

If you’re visiting Royal Alcazar of Seville for the first time, I think the Alone in the Alcazar tour is definitely worth it. 

It starts at 8:30AM, a full hour before the palace opens to the general public, and the difference is huge. 

It was so quiet inside, and walking through the courtyards and ornate rooms with only a small group and a knowledgeable guide felt really special. 

This tour is run by Walks, and they’re the only provider with this kind of early access, which makes it feel much more exclusive. 

Honestly, it’s one of the most unique and memorable tours I’ve done in Spain. 

Later in the day, the crowds can get pretty obnoxious, and you’ll likely be waiting your turn to take photos or trying to crop people out of every shot. 

If your budget allows, I think this is one of those experiences where paying extra really does make a difference.

This 1.5 hour Alone in the Alcazar tour includes a local English-speaking guide, a fully guided walking tour, and VIP early access with pre-reserved tickets.

Headsets are also provided for slightly larger groups.  There were only a few other people on my tour so they weren’t needed.

The tour starts at Plaza del Triunfo, which is just outside the main entrance of the Royal Alcázar of Seville, so make sure you don’t head directly to the ticket line.

You’re asked to arrive 15 minutes early at 8:15AM, and this is where you’ll meet your guide and small group before heading in together.

We met our guide, Raquel, who was super friendly and shared so much interesting context right from the start.

Then we headed into the palace starting at the Patio de la Montería (Hunting Courtyard), the main courtyard that leads into the Royal Alcazar of Seville.

This area was originally used as a meeting spot for royal hunts, which is where the name comes from.

It’s one of the first places you start to notice the mix of different architectural styles.

One of the biggest highlights of the tour is the Patio de las Doncellas (Courtyard of the Maidens).

This interior courtyard is pretty much the popular photo spot inside the palace with a long reflecting pool surrounded by arches and colorful tilework. 

And going early means you can actually get those photos without a crowd behind you.

The Salon de Embajadores (Hall of Ambassadors) is also really impressive, with a huge gold dome and detailed patterns covering the walls. 

It was used for important ceremonies, and it definitely feels grand when you step inside. 

And with fewer people around, you can actually stop and look up instead of being rushed through.

Another major highlight of the tour are the Alcazar Gardens, which are massive and filled with fountains, tiled benches, green palms, orange trees, and walking paths. 

During the early access tour, it’s really quiet and you can hear the water from the fountains as you walk around. 

Make sure to check out the Mercury Pond and the views from the Galería de Grutesco.

If you’ve seen Game of Thrones, you’ll probably recognize parts of the palace. 

The Patio de las Doncellas and the gardens were used as the Water Gardens of Dorne.

• Book in advance: The Royal Alcazar of Seville is one of the most popular attractions in Seville, and tours like this can sell out quickly, so it’s best to reserve your spot early.

• Take extra time to explore after the tour: The tour ends just as general entry begins, but you can stay longer to explore parts of the gardens that aren’t covered in the tour. Don’t miss the elevated views from the Galería de Grutesco, where you can see La Giralda from Seville Cathedral.

• Wear comfortable shoes: You’ll be doing a fair amount of walking through the palace and gardens, so comfortable shoes are key.

• Watch your step: There are lots of small steps and uneven floor levels throughout the palace, and they can be easy to miss while you’re looking around.

• Be prepared for the heat in summer: It can get very hot, especially in the gardens, so bring water, a hand fan, and dress accordingly if you’re visiting Seville during warmer months.

• Go to the correct meeting point: The meeting point is at Plaza del Triunfo, not the main entrance.  There was actually a couple on my tour who almost missed it because they went to the wrong spot.
