Is the Royal Alcazar Worth Visiting in Seville? Guide + Tips

I think the Royal Alcazar in Seville is absolutely worth visiting. It’s one of the most beautiful palaces in Spain, filled with intricate tilework, horseshoe arches, and gardens that seem to go on forever.

If you’re visiting for the first time, I highly recommend booking this Alone in the Alcazar tour. It starts at 8:30AM, a full hour before the palace opens to the public. 

Walking through the courtyards and ornate halls with only a handful of other people was so unforgettable and gave me time to take photos without the usual crowds.

That said, if you don’t plan ahead, the experience can be very different. 

The palace is one of the top Seville attractions and gets extremely busy later in the day. Lines can be long, and many rooms feel cramped when tour groups pass through.

If you go early (especially with a guided tour like this) you’ll see why it’s such a special place.

The Royal Alcazar of Seville (“Real Alcázar” in Spanish) dates back to the 10th century when it was built as a fortress for Muslim rulers. 

Over time, it was expanded and transformed by different monarchs, blending Islamic, Gothic, Renaissance, and Baroque styles into one complex.

It’s still the official residence of the Spanish royal family when they visit Seville, though most of the time it’s open to the public.

Some streets are pedestrian-only though so you might have a bit of a walk from the main streets.

The visit is brief, but it’s interesting if you want to see more of the private areas used by royalty. 

If you’re short on time or budget, you can skip this add-on without missing the main highlights.

For the best experience, I highly recommend booking the Alone in the Alcazar tour, which allows you to enter the palace at 8:30AM before it opens to the public. 

Having the courtyards, arches, and gardens almost to yourself is worth the higher price.

Plus, you’ll have a private guide who will explain the history and point out all the details you might otherwise miss.

This is one of the most photographed areas in the palace, with a long reflecting pool framed by carved arches and colorful tilework. 

The symmetry and design are stunning, and early morning light makes the photos even better. 

The Hall of Ambassadors is one of the most impressive rooms of the palace, with a spectacular gold dome and walls covered in intricate patterns. 

It was used for receiving dignitaries and holding important ceremonies, and you can definitely feel the grandeur the moment you step inside. 

The gardens stretch far beyond the palace walls and are filled with fountains, tiled benches, hedge mazes, and orange trees. 

You can spend a long time wandering through the paths, listening to the sound of water from the many fountains. 

Don’t miss the Mercury Pond and the Galeria de Grutesco, which provide some of the best elevated views of the gardens.

Several areas of the Royal Alcazar were used in Game of Thrones to depict the Water Gardens of Dorne. 

The Patio de las Doncellas appears in scenes where characters walk along the pool, while the gardens serve as the backdrop for conversations between the Sand Snakes and Ellaria Sand.

The Baths of Maria de Padilla, with their vaulted underground pools, also appear in the show.

• Book the Alone in the Alcazar tour to beat the crowds: For the best experience, I highly recommend booking the Alone in the Alcazar tour.  Entering at 8:30AM before the public opening lets you explore in near silence, get better photos, and enjoy the palace without being surrounded by large groups.

• Book your tickets online in advance: The Royal Alcazar is one of the busiest attractions in Seville, and same-day tickets often sell out. Make sure to purchase tickets ahead of time on the official website or secure your spot by booking a tour. 

• Go as early as possible: If you can’t book the early tour, choose the earliest regular time available. The difference in crowd size between morning and afternoon is huge.

• Don’t miss the upstairs viewpoints in the gardens: These elevated spots, like the Galeria de Grutesco, give you a bird’s-eye view of the gardens and are often overlooked by visitors.

• Bring headphones for the audioguide: The audioguide is downloaded to your mobile phone so make sure to bring your own headphones so you don’t have to hold your phone to your ear the whole time. 

• Watch your step: The royal palace has many small, uneven steps and changes in floor height, especially in the older sections. They can be easy to miss when you’re looking around.

• Look for the Game of Thrones filming spots: If you’re a fan of the show, make sure to check out some of the Game of Thrones filming locations. The Baths of Maria de Padilla and Patio de las Doncellas are must-sees.
