Clothes to Wear in Barcelona in January

When planning how to dress in Barcelona in January, I’d recommend packing warm layers for the cooler winter weather.

Sweaters, long-sleeve tops, jeans, and a warm coat are good staples. I personally wear a long wool coat pretty much all winter in Barcelona.

For shoes, I’d stick with comfortable sneakers or boots since you’ll probably be doing a lot of walking.

I’d also recommend bringing a scarf, winter hat, and gloves just in case, although you probably won’t end up needing the gloves.

Temperatures can get pretty chilly in the evenings, so be sure to bring some warmer layers for dinners and nighttime activities.

What to Pack for Barcelona in January

Here’s a quick list of essentials for your Barcelona January trip:

  • Scarf: Bring a scarf or two to stay warm and add a layering element to your outfits.

  • Hat & Gloves: You might not need them every day, but I’d recommend bringing a winter hat and a pair of gloves just in case.

  • Warm Layers: The temperatures can get chilly, especially in the evenings, so make sure to pack lots of layers, including sweaters, long-sleeved shirts, jackets, a scarf.

  • Closed-Toed Shoes: Comfortable shoes are a must for exploring the city, and closed-toed ones will keep your feet warm and dry if it rains.

  • Anti-Theft Bag: While Barcelona is generally very safe, pickpocketing is unfortunately pretty common. You’ll definitely want to bring an anti-theft bag like a belt bag or crossbody purse with secure zippers to keep your belongings safe.

  • Phone Leash:  In addition to an anti-theft bag, I wouldn’t come to Barcelona without a phone leash to secure your phone. Phones are easily stolen out of your hands or if you leave them on a restaurant table or in your pocket.

  • Umbrella: January isn’t the wettest month, but you should still bring a travel-sized umbrella in case of sudden rain showers.

  • Travel Adapter:  Don’t forget your travel adapter if you’re coming from a country that uses different plugs!

  • Portable Charger: Exploring the city can quickly drain your phone battery, so having a portable charger on hand is always a good idea.
